Mis à jour : 22 sept. 2020
The Race Around today announced GAC Pindar, the leading marine sport, leisure and event logistics supplier, as its Official Logistics Provider. This announcement, the first of many partnership announcements, cements The Race Around’s intentions to build a successful and sustainable race by partnering with leading companies, with a proven track record of delivering on an international stage. Starting in the summer of 2023 and run on a four-year cycle, the recently announced ‘Race Around’ is a multi-stage offshore yacht race for teams racing Class40s. Open to both amateurs and professionals the Race Around is run by sailors, for sailors, with the full endorsement and support of the Class40 Association. Hugh Piggin, Event Directorsaid, “The Race Around’s traditional route, which features the three great Capes of ocean navigation brings immense excitement, but also several challenges. The sport of offshore yacht racing is fluid, contains time pressures and sometimes unavoidable or unexpected obstacles. Obstacles and time pressures that are relieved by working with proven industry leaders like GAC Pindar. Their global network will allow us to move The Race Around, across the globe with specialist knowledge specific to each host city, team or situation. We recognise this partnership as crucial to our ongoing success and look forward to delivering together, a global sporting event.” Headquartered in the UK sailing hub of Southampton, GAC Pindar is a division of GAC Services (UK) and part of the GAC Group. Established since 1956, GAC Employs over 9,000 people in more than 300 offices world-wide. Offering services ranging from road, sea and air transportation to the movement of yacht spares, vessel monitoring and recovery logistics, the GAC Pindar suite of services have been utilised by key global sailing events such as the Volvo Ocean Race and the new look GC32 Racing Tour. Jeremy Troughton, GAC Pindar General Managersaid “Our Control Tower team is perfectly set up to meet the demands of events such as The Race Around. Our offering goes beyond general freight forwarding, providing event consultancy to host cities and event organisers, on the ground services to organisers and teams, as well as 24-hour monitoring of vessels while at sea. This new and inspiring offering to the sailing world can utilise any of these services and we look forward to working with The Race Around as they create a premiere global sailing event.” Alongside the announcement of GAC Pindar’s involvement, The Race Around has also announced further information about the race. These include prize money and an overhaul of traditional event entry fees. Sam Holliday, Co-Foundersaid “We’re thrilled to be announcing our first commercial partner with GAC Pindar and we’re also very excited to announce the inclusion of six figure prize money along with a shake-up on how we structure items such as entry fees. For too long competitors have been seen as significant financial contributors to race budgets and we feel strongly that this is wrong. A small entry fee of 5,000 Euro will remain but the emphasis will be upon the 10,000 Euro deposit that will be returned to teams upon completing certain obligations” Interest in The Race Around has been significant. Commercial partners, host cities and sailors from around the world have all expressed a deep desire to be involved. The current list of potential creditable competitors has now exceeded 40. They come from 12 different countries. Many of those are coming from Class40 and the ever competitive Classe Mini. Interest has also been shown by former IMOCA teams, and a number of highly talented amateurs too. Entries will officially open in mid 2020 but these figures indicate that excitement and interest in short-handed offshore sailing continues to grow around the globe.
